aint catherines point is the southern most point of the isle of wight and seperates the back of the wight from the undercliffs of ventnor.
history
Edit
from what i gather there was a de godeton who stole wine from a ship called st.marie from her wreck in the year 1323. De godeton felt guilty afterwards so he was ordered to build a light house to help the ships be warned of the cliffs they would be facing in otherwise trecherouse conditions. Once there was a chapel attached to the light house but that has long been demollished. The lighthouse was one of the earliest in England. The new building was located lower to aviod fog cover.
